The SSQ‑36B is a NATO A‑size expendable bathythermograph manufactured for the U.S. Navy. It provides vertical temperature profiles of the ocean layer for research and anti‑submarine warfare, letting crews evaluate how local seawater temperature affects sonar propagation and acoustic range prediction.
A thermistor in the probe measures the change in seawater temperature as it descends from the surface, and the data is transmitted by RF to the launch aircraft for display as temperature against depth. The buoy profiles to 800 meters and selects one VHF transmitter channel out of 99 available.
