The SSQ‑53F sonobuoy combines passive directional sensing with calibrated wide‑band omni performance in a single, multi‑function design. It replaces both the AN/SSQ‑53D and the AN/SSQ‑57, consolidating two sensors into one buoy without giving up the capability of either.
The SSQ‑53F uses Electronic Function Select for pre‑launch setup and CFS for in‑water adjustments, enabling precise control of sensor mode, buoy life, depth, AGC level, and RF channel. It operates in three acoustic sensor modes and provides directional data to establish bearing to underwater sources, giving operators a consistent picture across a search area.
